Sarah Gifford
Scholarship Awarded: Undergraduate

College: University of Texas at Dallas

Major: Business Administration

What you hope this scholarship will help you achieve?
Having been forced to take a gap year due to unforeseen family health challenges in 2019, I hope that the TWPF Undergraduate scholarship will act as the buffer I need to ensure that no external challenges can wedge themselves between me and my academic aspirations again. For my sophomore year, I foresee this scholarship giving me the freedom to prioritize extracurricular passions and community service above any income-generating pursuits, allowing me to grow as a student and individual.

How you found out about this scholarship:
The 2020 Kate Bechtold Undergraduate Scholarship first appeared on my radar during an extensive search for Texas-based groups that support women’s education.

Your current hobbies:
I run a public, Dallas-based book club for people in their 20’s and early 30’s. My friend and I named it Young & Hungry in August of 2019 at its launch, in honor of our combined passion for good food and books. When I am not running the book club or preparing for its monthly potluck, I am pursuing some of my other hobbies including watercoloring, hiking, and succulent propagation. I am also slated to begin my first pottery class before the end of this 2020 summer!

Your Future Goals:
At large, my goal in life is to gratefully live out my purpose and help others do the same. I believe that everyone was born with an overarching mission in life, and every year, I get closer to discovering mine. In the meantime, my first goal is to spend the 2020-21 academic year working for the University of Texas at Dallas’s G-Force Program. This would allow me to teach underserved high students that college is a viable option for everyone, no matter what they’re up against. I want to help at least ten students pursue their academic dreams with little to no debt by personally walking them through the admissions, financial aid, and scholarship processes. Secondly, I’ve set a goal to visit—and potentially study in—at least one place outside of the United States so that I can gain an international perspective of the world before I graduate. Finally, I would like to publish a book before I turn 30.
